Lake District-Inspired Game Atomfall Wins Big at Bafta Awards

A post-apocalyptic adventure set in the heart of the Lake District has taken home one of the biggest honours in British gaming.

Atomfall, developed by Rebellion Developments, has been named Best British Game at the prestigious BAFTA Games Awards — marking a major moment for UK game development.

Inspired by the real-life Windscale fire, the game reimagines history through a chilling sci-fi lens. Instead of a contained disaster, Atomfall explores an alternate timeline where the surrounding area becomes a dangerous quarantine zone, cut off from the outside world.

Players are dropped into a haunting version of Cumbria, where rolling green hills hide a darker reality — abandoned villages, eerie silence, and the looming presence of a nuclear facility spiralling out of control.

The game’s striking visuals and uniquely British setting have been key to its success.

Game designer Ben Fisher described the Bafta win as “absolutely mind-blowing,” admitting the team had no idea how players would respond during development.

“When you’re making a game you’ve no idea whether people are going to really connect with it or not,” he said. “So it was really satisfying to get that recognition.”

A huge part of that connection comes from authenticity.

Developers took extra care to capture the look and feel of rural Cumbria — from the architecture of its villages to the atmosphere of the surrounding countryside. The result is a world that feels both familiar and unsettling, blending British heritage with dystopian storytelling.

The win highlights the growing global influence of the UK gaming industry, with Atomfall proving that homegrown stories — even those rooted in real historical events — can resonate with audiences worldwide.

And for Rebellion, it’s a clear sign they’ve struck the right balance between history, imagination and immersive gameplay.
